Every winter, the majestic Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard sets aside its medieval look and dons its finest seasonal attire: that of Santa’s Castle. Perched high above Lake Annecy, this already spectacular monument becomes the setting for a true winter fairy tale. For its 6th edition, from November 13, 2026 to January 2, 2027, the castle promises nearly two months of festive magic, with a newcomer determined to disrupt Santa’s preparations.
Santa’s Castle 2026: what to expect this year
Throughout the holiday season, a true Christmas village comes to life at the foot of the castle, with an artisan market, an ice rink and food stalls. Inside, the rooms are decked out with decorations inspired by Christmas traditions. Heritage and imagination come together to make the site a place for strolling, meeting and sharing, open every day.
Croc Noël, the new character for the 2026 edition
This year’s big news is the arrival of Croc Noël at the castle. Mischievous and unpredictable, this character upends Santa’s preparations and has a few surprises in store for visitors. A touch of mischief that is sure to delight children… and intrigue their parents.
A spectacular transformation: where history meets enchantment
A medieval fortress remodeled during the Renaissance and again in the 19th century, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard is the perfect setting for the spirit of Christmas. Its soaring turrets, pointed roofs and grand old rooms are ideal for this festive transformation. When the decorations appear, the place is completely transformed:
- twinkling lights along the ramparts,
- Christmas trees and snow-covered decorations,
- hanging lanterns,
- illuminations and projections on the façades,
- magical displays in the castle rooms.
The contrast between the historic setting and the enchanted atmosphere creates a unique mood, both majestic and warm, as if Santa Claus himself had settled in high above the lake.
Inside: a trail for young and old alike
The trail takes around 45 minutes to visit, but the experience can easily stretch over several hours when you include the castle, village and market.
Santa’s house and workshop
This is the heart of the trail. Discover Santa’s office, his letters, his workshop… Every detail is designed to immerse visitors in the preparations for the night of December 24. Children can meet Santa Claus in person, always happy to pose for a souvenir photo.
Historic rooms decorated for the occasion
Drawing rooms, bedrooms, old kitchens: visitors wander through period settings brought to life by warm lighting and objects given a festive makeover. It’s also a chance to discover the history of this iconic castle, which has been home to the same family for centuries.
The enchanted forest
In previous editions, an enchanted forest was one of the children’s favorite areas, with glowing animals and an immersive winter atmosphere. The details of the 2026 trail are yet to be revealed, but the magic will certainly be there.
The Christmas village at the foot of the castle
The artisan market
The Christmas market showcases local artisans and creators. In 2025, around fifteen chalets offered handmade jewelry, wooden toys, handcrafted candles and gourmet food products. Plenty of inspiration for original gift ideas, away from the big-name stores.
The ice rink and activities
The ice rink is one of the village’s must-see attractions. Throughout the season, activities bring the days and evenings to life: shows, music, storytelling and meetings with Christmas characters. Last year, there was even a fireworks display on December 23.
A tasty break overlooking the lake
The holiday season wouldn’t be complete without a few treats. Hot chocolate, crêpes, mulled wine and Savoyard specialties await visitors on the castle terraces, along with one of the finest views of Lake Annecy.
The perfect time to visit: arrive at dusk
Arriving just before nightfall is still the best choice. The sun disappears behind the mountains, the first lights come on across the façades and the castle comes to life, like a movie set. In November and December, it gets dark early: aim to arrive around 4:30 p.m. to enjoy both settings, first in daylight and then illuminated.
Our opinion: is it worth visiting with young children?
Every year, I return to the castle for this special visit, and every time I have the same feeling: a moment out of time. The view of the lake, the soft glow of the lights, the children running toward Santa’s house… You forget everything else.
Let’s be honest: the experience is all about the atmosphere of the village, the market and the illuminations. Families with very young children (ages 1 to 2) may find the visit less suitable, especially on busy evenings. From age 3 or 4, however, the sense of wonder is guaranteed. For a quieter visit, choose a weekday evening rather than the weekend.
