Snow forecast in Haute-Savoie

Where will it snow in Haute-Savoie over the coming days? This page brings together the snowfall forecast for the next 7 days, in the valleys and at ski resorts, the altitude of the 0 °C isotherm, and detailed weather forecasts for the main ski resorts. The data is updated automatically several times a day.

In brief

  • The table below shows the expected snowfall in centimetres each day in Annecy, Thonon-les-Bains, Cluses, Chamonix, La Clusaz, Megève and Avoriaz.
  • The 0 °C isotherm indicates the altitude above which temperatures are below freezing: snow generally falls down to a few hundred metres below this altitude.
  • These forecasts are automatic estimates. For safety in the mountains, always check the official Météo-France bulletin.

7-day snow forecast for Haute-Savoie

The figures are calculated for the altitude shown next to each location: a ski resort may receive several dozen centimetres while the neighbouring valley gets rain. Blue cells indicate at least 1 cm of expected snow.

How to read this table

Forecasts for the first two or three days are the most reliable. Beyond that, snowfall totals provide a general trend that may change from one update to the next, especially during weather events when the rain-snow line is close to the altitude of the towns.

The “0 °C isotherm” line shows the lowest altitude reached by the freezing level during the day. When it drops below 1,000 m, snow may reach the Arve and Chablais valleys or the Annecy basin.

Snow in the lowlands: when should you expect it?

Annecy, Thonon-les-Bains, Annemasse and Cluses are located between 400 and 500 m above sea level. For snow to fall there, both precipitation and air cold enough all the way down to the ground are needed; this generally means the rain-snow line must drop below 500 m.

Snowfall in the lowlands occurs mainly from December to February, but a cold spell can bring the first flakes to the valleys as early as November. These events are often brief: snow rarely lasts more than a few days below 600 m.

Getting around when it snows

Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles must be fitted with winter tyres or carry chains or snow socks from 1 November to 31 March in municipalities designated by prefectural decree, which applies to the vast majority of Haute-Savoie. Before driving to the ski resorts, check traffic conditions and any pass closures.

Frequently asked questions

When does the first snow fall in Haute-Savoie?
At altitude, the first flakes often fall as early as September or October above 2,000 m. At mid-altitude ski resorts, snow usually settles between late November and December, while in the valleys it is more irregular, mainly from December to February.

What is the difference between the 0 °C isotherm and the rain-snow line?
The 0 °C isotherm is the altitude at which the air temperature drops below zero. The rain-snow line is generally a few hundred metres lower, because snowflakes take time to melt as they pass through a layer of slightly above-freezing air.

Are these forecasts reliable enough for a trip to the mountains?
They provide a good general outlook for planning a stay or a weekend away. For off-piste skiing, ski touring or snowshoeing, they are no substitute for the Météo-France avalanche bulletin or the advice of a mountain professional.

How often is this page updated?
The snowfall table is updated every hour and the resort weather forecasts approximately every 30 minutes, based on forecasts from the Open-Meteo model.
