Weather: What is the outlook for this winter in Haute-Savoie?

In brief

  • The end of 2026 is likely to be warmer than average, according to Météo-France
  • The October-December quarter is expected to be rather wet across a large part of the country
  • Snow: occasional episodes are possible, but mild weather is expected to prevail in the lowlands
  • At higher elevations, abundant precipitation can turn into significant snowfall

The first morning frosts have arrived, the peaks are beginning to turn white… and one question comes up every autumn: what will winter be like in Haute-Savoie? Météo-France and La Chaîne Météo have published their first outlooks for winter 2026-2027. The verdict: the season is set to start off rather mild and wet, with considerable uncertainty about snow at lower elevations.

A milder-than-usual end to the year

According to Météo-France’s seasonal forecasts, the period from October to December 2026 is most likely to be warmer than average in mainland France and Corsica. This trend follows the pattern of recent winters, which have often been marked by above-average temperatures.

La Chaîne Météo predicts the same trend and puts a figure on the difference: around +2 to +3 °C in November, about +1.5 °C in December, then +1 °C in January 2027 compared with the average. As a reminder, in Haute-Savoie, typical midwinter temperatures generally range from -2 °C to 6 °C in the valleys and at mid-altitudes.

Seasonal forecasts: what do they mean?

A seasonal forecast is not a weather report. It doesn’t say what the weather will be like on a particular day in Annecy or Chamonix, but indicates which scenario is most likely over a three-month period across a large area. A “generally mild” winter can certainly include sharp cold snaps and heavy snowfall.

Heavier precipitation

As for precipitation, Météo-France favors a wetter-than-average quarter across a large part of mainland France. Only the Southeast is an exception: no particular trend is favored there. Haute-Savoie lies on the boundary between these two areas, making the forecast more challenging for the department.

La Chaîne Météo also expects above-average precipitation, with fairly regular storm systems throughout autumn and early winter.

What about snow?

It’s the big question for both holidaymakers and ski resorts. Forecasters are cautious: mild weather is expected to prevail, but occasional cold spells and snowfall cannot be ruled out.

In the lowlands and at lower elevations

With temperatures expected to be above average, snow may be scarce in Annecy, the Arve Valley, or around Lake Geneva. Precipitation will more often fall as rain, at least until the end of the year. A white Christmas in the lowlands is possible, but it is not the most likely scenario.

At higher elevations: a different story

In the mountains, the picture changes. A wet winter, even a mild one, can bring heavy snowfall above a certain elevation. Haute-Savoie’s high-altitude resorts, such as Avoriaz, Flaine, and the high-altitude areas of the Mont-Blanc massif, are therefore best placed to benefit from these storm systems. Mid-mountain resorts will depend more on the rain-snow line and artificial snowmaking.

How this could affect your winter holiday

  • For Christmas: choose a high-altitude resort if skiing is the main focus of your trip.
  • For February: seasonal outlooks beyond January are still too far out to be reliable. Forecasts will become clearer over the coming weeks.
  • On the road: even in a mild winter, the Mountain Law requires winter tires or special equipment (chains, snow socks) from November 1 to March 31 in the municipalities concerned in Haute-Savoie.
  • Day to day: check forecasts a few days ahead—the only ones that are truly reliable—before every trip to the mountains.

The first snowflakes already in the forecast

Despite these mild outlooks, autumn has already brought its first surprises: the first snowflakes fell on Haute-Savoie’s peaks last week. A reminder that the mountains always hold an element of surprise, and that seasonal forecasts are only an indication.

FAQ

Will winter 2026-2027 be mild in Haute-Savoie?
That’s the most likely scenario according to Météo-France and La Chaîne Météo, especially in November and December, with temperatures above average.

Will it snow at Christmas in Haute-Savoie?
At higher elevations, the chances are good thanks to the abundant precipitation expected. In the lowlands, mild weather makes a white Christmas less likely, though not impossible.

Will ski resorts open as usual?
High-altitude resorts should benefit from the storm systems. Mid-mountain resorts will depend more on temperatures and artificial snowmaking.

Are seasonal forecasts reliable?
They provide a large-scale outlook for a three-month period, not a prediction of the weather on a specific day. They should be supplemented with short-range forecasts.
