Tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, Annecy Old Town hosts Retour des Alpages 2026, the major Savoyard festival celebrating the herds’ return from their summer pastures. Cows, goats, donkeys and shepherds in traditional costume are getting ready to fill the cobbled streets along the Thiou.

The highlight of the day is the animal parade, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. With bells around their necks, the animals, decked out for the occasion, make their way through the historic center as tens of thousands of spectators look on. To enjoy the spectacle, it’s best to arrive early and find a spot along the route: the best viewing spots are snapped up well before the herds pass by.
A full day of Savoyard traditions
The parade is just one part of the festivities. From 9 a.m., Annecy’s streets turn into a large Alpine village: demonstrations of traditional crafts, artisans at work, folk groups, traditional music and stalls selling local produce. It’s the perfect opportunity to sample cheeses and local specialties directly from the producers.
A festival bringing people together since 1973
Revived in 1973 and organized by the Annecy Traditions association, the festival attracts nearly 80,000 visitors every year. It carries on an age-old pastoral tradition: in early autumn, the herds leave the mountain pastures and return to the valley.
